Willst zu meinen Liedern deine Leier dreh'n?

I should start carrying a camera again. Last Friday, there was a man playing a hurdy-gurdy outside the Harvard Book Store. I'd never seen one in real life. I didn't recognize any of the tunes. I had Winterreise stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Also, there now exist color photographs of post-earthquake-and-fire San Francisco.

I was just now thinking of the instrument and idly wondering if I could find one on ebay.

It will have to wait until I get home, but still... I bet there are a few.

I saw the hurdy gurdy man two visits to Boston ago. I was very geeked by seeing one in the wild.

I see him now and then in fine weather, with joy.

Excellent. There's not enough hurdy-gurdies out there.*

I once saw a concert by a family group (parents and two sons) with hurdy-gurdies and a harpsichord in a coffee shop in Danbury. My mother and I were the only folk who showed up, which was unfortunate.

I had Winterreise stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

I hope this was an enjoyable experience.

*Of course, now I've said (or even thought) that, two of them, badly tuned (and probably in different keys, for maximum horribleness) and played by stunningly clueless individuals, will infest my favourite sessions. ;-)

Pfah, hurdygurdy. You should LJ-post about the OTHER discovery of the year.

I love him! I bought a CD -- the baroque one, because it was called "La Follia Itinerante: Baroque Street Music for Two Hurdy-Gurdies & Violin Vol. I" rather than the more eclectic English folk one (which in retrospect I regret, since I like English folk more than baroque music, but I couldn't turn down a CD that called the Itinerant Fool, at least until after I heard it for the first time and realized I would have preferred the other).

This is the web site.

FYI in the future ... my cell phone camera does a pretty good job. And I recently figured out how to get pictures off it. Check your e-mail.

Like black-footed ferrets and ivory-billed woodpeckers...

In our country (Ukraine), hurdy-gurdy, more and more common.
