Like many multidimensional good movies and operas, this was based on a solid book whose spirit was honored, which means that the characters of Jimson and the others were strongly delineated. Personally, I find self-obsessed artists exasperating though I agree the Guinness was excellent (but for my taste, his best role was as George Smiley in the exquisite le Carré adaptations).
