It's very much paired in my mind with the TV series Callan, which started a couple of years later, and starred Edward Woodward.
I resent the existence of region codes in general, but I particularly resent that the surviving black-and-white episodes of Callan came out on DVD a few months ago onlyin Region 2; I have loved Edward Woodward ever since the spring of 2007, when I watched Breaker Morant and The Wicker Man within a fortnight of one another. (Later that summer he turned up in Hot Fuzz.) Your recommendation of the series will be one more reason for me to wish for a regionless player, or for marketing to be less annoying.
I think they made a film of it a bit later, but I'm not sure how well it stood up to the original series.
I think it was an expansion of the original television play, A Magnum for Schneider; I don't know.
