Your title of your story makes me think of that--except amber and pearl are a better combination, both being created from living things.

It's a line from Matthew Arnold's "The Forsaken Merman":

We shall see, while above us
The waves roar and whirl,
A ceiling of amber,
A pavement of pearl.

Did you like Till We Have Faces? I remember it fondly, but I haven't read it since high school.
