Isn't he one of the Steinbeck characters supposed to be based on Ed Ricketts? (Doc in Cannery Row being a closer analogue, of course.)

"His face is half Christ and half satyr and his face tells the truth"? I didn't realize he was the original of more than one character. How did he feel about them?
