Is this a place you've all just moved to, or your home of some years? What prompts the renovation now?
We have lived in this house since I was ten or eleven; it underwent some renovation when we moved in, among other reasons because the taste of the previous owners had run to crimson shag carpet and wrought iron in the living room, and a few years later we built an addition onto one side so that my brother and I could have separate bedrooms. My parents have wanted to redo the kitchen for years, but never got around to it. I think their dissatisfaction with a dishwasher and oven at right angles to one another—there were other factors, but that one was just insult to injury—finally reached brimming point; we have been taking the cabinets and counters apart over the last few weeks, and the whole setup went critical a few days ago. And in fact today we had to take up the entire floor. Chaos reigns.
