That was one of my very most favorite books in elementary school.
It was like this gap in my brain—as soon as I picked the book up, I remembered reading it multiple times and vividly associated it with first or second grade, but I can't remember if it was assigned for class or if I discovered it on my own; I remembered all the names, the devilfish and the skirt of cormorant feathers, I just hadn't thought about them in years. Now I'm curious about other books I read around the same time and haven't touched since. The trick is going to be finding them . . .
