Interesting. I don't tend to think of the Light as godlike, I suppose, so I class their leavetaking more with the withdrawal of magic as seen in The Lord of the Rings, Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, and Babylon 5. Also, I think I'm looking at abandonment more in the straightly negative sense. Nobody really goes around afterward saying, "That Merriman, where the hell was he when my life all went to pot?" (Although I'm sure somewhere in the universe of fanfic, someone has . . .)
