I don't think putting the blame on the wider audience is the answer to this, in the sense that if it's not presented to them in something that they can understand and digest, then it might as well be irrevelant. It's more an issue of packaging and marketing than anything else and no one to date has done that quite successfully, in regards to this culture.
However, I doubt that any ignorance has any part in the destruction of our own heritage. I don't see your logic points in that statement, as human nature being what it is, we do it to ourselves, usually.
