Alabama water tastes like cherry wine

Because I had an optometrist's appointment in Medford this afternoon and spatch needs to practice driving, after I had gotten my eyes checked he took me out for dinner at the Woburn Bill & Bob's.



I got a roast beef sandwich with horseradish and cheese. We ate in the parking lot. It was delicious. Then we cruised around Winchester for a bit before running the evening's errands including the replacement of our shower curtain which had recently begun to disintegrate in a fashion more conventionally suited to haunted houses. The mail brought my CD of Oisín Leech's Cold Sea (2024). Tomorrow the air conditioning repair person cometh.

The air conditioning has thank God not been entirely broken, but neither does it seem to have been working as well as it did last summer, and we'd really like it to be before the heat dome comes back.

Is Bill and Bob's especially good? Asking because Mom's driver took her to Riley's for a roast beef sandwich recently and she enjoyed it very much. She would probably like a ride to Winchester for another one, if the sandwich is worth going for!

She enjoys diners, local doughnut places, and classic places that serve good Yankee foods, so, anyone, please let me know of any recommendations in Eastern Mass/Southern NH. At 96, these outings are all special events...

He did! One of our family friends used to live in Winchester, so my associations are primarily their house and later the Griffin Museum of Photography, but I didn't recognize most of the part we drove through. That is an intensely specific time your memory belongs to.

The new one is full of fish! I told spatch he looked like a fisherman weaving a net as he sat on the couch putting the two layers together on their rings.

I thought they were worth driving out to! No-frills, plentiful, and served on a griddled bun, which as a not especially sandwich-oriented person I enjoyed. Would definitely go back after another appointment with the optometrist in Medford. We have since received a recommendation for Pete's in the same area, but I can't speak to them myself.

spatch likes the roast beef at Kelly's, I love the fried whole-bellied clams. The Revere location is the most fun to eat at because of the beach.

For eating on the beach, we finally made it to Sullivan's at Castle Island last month and I was delighted by their hot dogs and hope to try their fried clams in future.

For local donuts, hands down my favorite is Lyndell's in Ball Square in Somerville, which also makes danishes and half-moons and eclairs and cream puffs and lobster tails and actual cakes and pies. Gail Ann in Arlington Center is tiny and also really nice—I used to visit them more often when I had more occasion to walk through the middle of Arlington.

The Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown has a diner car and terrific Reubens. spatch likes their johnnycakes, too.

Will think more about restaurants. I am somewhat out of the habit, having not actually eaten in one since early 2020 and most of last year and even the beginning of this one was home-cooked only.

Ooh, thank you!! I will suggest Revere Beach and Kelly's there for an outing. She loves getting to the beach and it's hard to find an accessible one, Revere isn't too far for a day trip. She lived in Medford for years, and still knows it well, I'll mention Pete's. Sullivan's sounds good and maybe the Hanover location would work. For clams she generally gets someone to take her to Clam Box.

Griddling the bun or not is the difference between a quality sandwich and a so-so one IMO. If you cannot be bothered to griddle the bun...eyeroll...

I'm going to give her the Lyndell's info as it sounds like exactly her thing. (Gail Ann is still there?! Mass Ave used to be dotted with sustaining doughnut shops. I miss the Dough-si-Dough and their incredible sour cream doughnuts.)

Legit. My favorite nearby clams come from Fresh Pond Seafood, which is no longer anywhere near Fresh Pond, but on the other hand it is currently within walking distance.

Verna's is no more, but Gail Ann is still there! Dough-si-Dough was the donut shop of my childhood. I have still never found a lemon-filled as good. Lyndell's reminds me of them.
