My first thought was "Phantom lady"!

Yes! (I saw that first on a double bill with Black Angel. It remains one of the better double bills I have walked into blind.) No Escape (1953) for the songwriting. Gilda (1946) because her musical numbers are the plot. I feel there's something else big I'm missing.

He made a compelling case straight off for Berke's Cop Hater (1958). I too want to see a pre-Fantasticks Jerry Orbach.
