As soon as I heard of the death of Mojo Nixon, I played his incomparable cover of "Girlfriend in a Coma" (1995) to remember him by, while spatch selected the psychobilly evangelism for which he had once been present at the Iron Horse, "Elvis Is Everywhere" (1987), and eventually we worked our way around to his and Jello Biafra's "Love Me, I'm a Liberal" (1994), which Phil Ochs probably knew would be depressingly, infinitely updatable. Only a few days ago I had been once again complaining that all the actors and artists and musicians seem to die off while the eternally destructive policymakers go on and then I was informed of the demise of Toby Keith and it was such an unexpected compromise, I could have done with a few more days before the status quo reasserted itself. Death, as Rob observed, is an insensitive idjit galoot.

I saw Mojo Nixon live in 1990 or 91. He was really good, just so much fun. He hung around after the show signing autographs, so somwewhere I have a flyer with his signature and "Carol is my new love slave" written on it. (nothing inappropriate was intended there - he was writing various silly and campy things for everyone)

But the gung-ho tone of the lyrics didn’t mean that he agreed with everything about the war in Iraq, describing himself politically to the magazine as “an extremely conservative Democrat” with mixed feelings about the motivations for the war with Iraq.
