Oh wow, this movie is not at all what I would have expected from the date, and sounds fascinating and really, really good (if sometimes unevenly so). Thanks so much for writing it up!

You're welcome! It is uneven, but I was saying to [personal profile] nineweaving that what it's doing just isn't something I have seen from any of its contemporaries, to the point where I finally realized that the closest thing it reminded me of, allowing for four decades and a more total immersion in the life of a Black neighborhood, was Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing (1989). I understand it has B-picture written all over it, but it really should not be obscure. Richard Brody turns out to have championed it in The New Yorker in 2020 and he pointed to exactly the same YouTube rip that I found. Maybe the Film Detective could get on a restoration? It really isn't a noir, otherwise the Film Noir Foundation would be exactly the people to bug about it.
