So true! I'll admit I almost kind of like DeFore here (despite myself), purely because his whole "golly-gee-whiz" vibe is so bizarrely out of place? But I would also take just about anyone else in the role, if you presented me with the possibility, and Wendell Corey could bring some much-needed subtle menace and ambiguity re: his relationship with Kathy.
On the topic of DeFore, I've since heard him described on a podcast as being (paraphrased), "You know when you were a kid and took the head off a Barbie doll, and then when you put it back on it never looked the same? Don DeFore is like if you did that with Ray Milland"--and now I can never unsee it, pfft.
