Ти ж хотів землі цієї, tож тепер змішайся з нею

I was not up for baking a cake from scratch tonight, but we had so much poppy seed paste left over that I poked around on the internet until I found a recipe which did not require me to do much more than already have frozen puff pastry, sour cherry jam, and confectioner's sugar on hand. What it did not give me was any hint of the intended size of the finished pastries, hence some experimentation on my part which seems to have made no difference to which ones retained the majority of their filling and which ones eviscerated themselves like sea cucumbers in the baking. Would make some changes, but would make again. There were no survivors.

And that was how I observed the confluence of Saint Patrick's Day and Purim, after eating corned beef and hamantashn.

I seem to feel strongly that if we are going to stop seesawing our circadian rhythms across the year, I don't understand the push for the permanent adoption of daylight savings time as opposed to its abolition in favor of standard time. It isn't sun-based. It was originally a wartime measure. This same move lasted less than a year when it was tried in the '70's. And I do not look forward to winter mornings under DST.

I am glad to know people who are translating poems out of Ukraine.

why DST

due to the latitude in Washington winter mornings are dark regardless - falling back to standard time means that you go to work in the dark AND you come home in the dark. it's brutal. we passed year-round daylight time here several years ago and have been waiting for a waiver from the feds in order to enact it (any state can stay on standard time without any special permission).

I don't actually understand what Florida - Marco Rubio sponsored the bill - will really get from this besides not doing a time change... although maybe they're far enough south that they never have dark mornings at all? I grew up in Pennsylvania and it was dim in December when i was on my way to school but never full dark. my first Seattle winter was a shock. (FWIW, I went down a little latitude rabbit hole. the difference in latitude between Boston and Seattle is equal to the difference between Richmond VA and Boston. Seattle is up near the northern border of Maine.)

The argument in Nixon's time for not having dark mornings was fears that children walking to bus stops would be more likely to be hit by cars, so the law was reversed. We have a pretty big country and lots of different conditions. It's a mess.
China is also big, and has one time zone for whole country, so they are a substantial reminder that there is nothing natural about clock time.

Ooh, those look very tasty :D

And I completely agree about daylight savings. I'd like to see it abolished, but really, staying on summer time all year round would be worse than what we have at the moment. I like my sunrises!

Those pastries sound very tasty.

I'm actually going to write my Congressperson and tell them not to vote for the act unless it's amended to make standard time permanent.
