I think that may be part of it, in that one can riff on early versions as well as catch and link echoes of other versions between them and one's own. That helps "one's own" to be plural, too.

Er, echoes are not much prone to linkage, are they? I blame lack of sleep. :P (I typed "ploral" at first, which though interesting is similarly not quite right....)
