Are myths inherently more in the public domain, even when I know very well that people like Kallimachos and Ovid and Catullus have tweaked them in specific ways?

I don't think so. I blame capitalism. Copyrighted characters shouldn't have to serve as nest eggs.

By the way, the comics also have the original invisible man.
