I think it's Sayles's feel for character and for the expansiveness of the world. He really really wants breadth of perspective, and he does it better than almost anyone. A Moment of the Sun is more of a gigantic brick than Yellow Earth, so there's more perspective but also more sprawl.

I am a giant fan of Matewan and Lone Star among his movies. But I'll try anything he does at least once.
