Two more candidates for the real films/fake bands are Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo, 1996. McDonald remixed this as Trigger in 2010
Thank you! I know of McDonald because of Pontypool (2008), but I have never heard of either of these movies.
I wonder if it would be unfair to both movies to screen Get Crazy on a double bill with Still Crazy (1998), which is a getting-the-band-back-together comedy where the band is Stephen Rea, Bill Nighy, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Nail, Timothy Spall, and Bruce Robinson. I remember it as charming rather than a classic, but it has some wonderful performances and the music didn't suck, which is what you need in this genre unless the music sucking is the point, in which case you should watch We Are the Best! (Vi är bäst!, 2013), the actually brilliant adventures of a trio of thirteen-year-old girls in Stockholm in 1982 who decide to start their own band in the utterly punk conviction that it is a feature rather than a bug that only one of them can play an instrument.
(You may just be able to detect that when it's done well, I really like this genre.)
