The most interesting things I’ve seen so far have been in shorts program 2. Some highlights there:
The Affected is a tart and crisp comedy set on a plane that can’t take off because a passenger refuses to sit down unless refugee who is being deported is removed from the plane and left in safety. The focus is specifically not on the person protesting or on the refugee, but everyone else on the plane, who are mostly ambiently supportive of the activism, but who aren’t doing anything.
Unlivable tells the story of a mother in Brazil who is searching for her missing trans daughter. The film switches between the challenges of someone trying to solve a problem themselves because of the indifference of bureaucracy to the marginalized, and an apocalyptic supernatural mode (in a sort of liminal/dreadful/hopeful religious sense.)
Mountain Cat is a Mongolian film about a young woman who is taken by her mother to see a shaman for a blessing before the being sent far away for expensive medical treatment. A really great character study of the woman’s boiling suppressed skepticism of someone she feels is taking advantage of her family. Made to help sell the concept of a feature film, it is a complete, concentrated and successful work on its own.
