I don't quite understand how this film managed to feel so seamless and authentic about its rituals and so rackety about parts of the actual plot, but at least I find this ratio more interesting than the other way around. Movies that attempt the numinous/supernatural and then blow it are difficult for me.
I watched the trailer on Youtube; the image with the plates is arresting.
I never think to link or even look for trailers. I think it's because I don't watch them. Every couple of years I run across one that makes me want to see a movie, but then it's even odds if I actually do.
And I can imagine the guy on the armchair vividly from your description--not surprised that it was an image that really lingered (and that really was in the film).
