And last night I dreamed about a sailing ship full of tattered and half-destroyed books, some of them so old that you could pick up a volume and all its pages would sift out from between the covers in a snowfall of crumbled paper and dust

Well, that's why people in the publishing industry tear the covers off of used paperbacks when they report them as "unsold and destroyed". It staves off the day of Ragnarokk, when Loki shall sail up from the underworld in a big pulp-paper schooner with a hull made out of dime-novel covers.

I wish I could've come to your party! Seeing the photos is the next best thing. I was at a gig, which was OK but kinda dull. (Although I did get to see four people dressed as a string quartet. They all had wooden tuning pegs sticking out of their heads, and brown T-shirts with fingerboards and F-holes on their tummies.)
