Oliver's a horrible parent. At the end of the movie, he is slightly less horrible, but by no means good. But one of his (many) errors is thinking that he is the protagonist. His story function is as an antagonist to Amy.

To me, the movie epitomizes one of Kestrell's favorite sayings: "Grownups lie." Oliver's last line just reinforces that.
