This is really, really interesting! I was trying to figure out why the second paragraph gave me such a sense of deja vu, and then I remembered that I'd watched a few scenes of the film in a high school literature class, when we were reading Manuel Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman-- I Walked with a Zombie is one of the movies described/discussed in the novel.
