Huh. This reminds me of the kind of book a friend of mine writes. He has a novel titled CHUM, which is beautifully written, but it's about such ugly people and their lives that I really disliked it. Which broke my heart, because I love his urban fantasy and dystopian novels so much. (In fact, he's really the only dystopian writer I read any more.)
