Wow, that sounds like a trip! Wasn't Hearst one of those America First types?
I don't know that for certain, but I would not be surprised. Hearst started out on the left wing—he was a major supporter of FDR during his first presidential campaign—and then swung hard far right later in the '30's, to the point of publishing favorable coverage of Hitler and Mussolini. His involvement in this movie was consistent with both sides of his politics, I guess.
I admit the rocket launchers made me laugh, as did the whole Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln tradition speech, though I guess that's not meant to be a laugh line.
Almost nothing in this movie was meant to be a laugh line, but sometimes I don't know what else you can healthily do.
