Oh dear, now I'm picturing Bergman sneaking into a room with an exaggerated cartoonish tippy-toe gait.

He's being self-deprecating; maybe you're supposed to. I'm trying to decide if I think he's right. I bounced off his most conventionally dreamlike movie—Persona (1966)—but The Seventh Seal, Hour of the Wolf (1968), and the original TV Fanny and Alexander (1982) are all full of visions that just seem naturally to exist; it's one of the reasons I love them.
