I'm impressed with my sense of universal timing! I didn't need them to be any age at any point except for the diplomacy thing. "Enough Years Older Than Fleming to Eyeroll Upon First Meeting" is a broad, wobbly number; "Let's Go Get Kicked Out of the Imperial City -- but with Heralds!" is specific.
