You're hungry, but I'm starving
I just got back from seeing Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama's Jennifer's Body (2009) at the Brattle with
rushthatspeaks. I hope to write about it this weekend, but this was a particularly good evening to see a very funny but emotionally on-point horror movie that does not give an inch to the male gaze and makes narratively and thematically flawless use of Hole's "Violet."
Before leaving the house, I asked
a_reasonable_man a question about the Supreme Court—what happens if the American people lose faith in its legitimacy—and he gave me an extremely useful answer. Even if it does nothing to dispel my sense of our long national remix, it is instructive for me to know that we have been somewhere like this before.
I woke this morning with a line from a Mowgli's song in my head ("But I still dream of waking up / To find the future screaming") to find that the present was doing a perfectly good job of screaming for itself. At least the repairman finally came and fixed our oven. I do not plan to put my head inside it. It is autumn and I am going to bake apples.

I'm glad you have a working oven so you can bake apples.

I really am going to try! I have professional commitments to get out of the way first. [edit] Done.

I have the apples!

The temperatures here keep seesawing between real autumn and climate change autumn, but I still have hope. The light looks right. The air smells like it.

You could bake them a cider thing in celebration.

Apropos of nothing much, except why not, I found a gif of that bit you mentioned to me from Horror of Dracula:

Aw. Thank you!

I'm going to try to write them up. Today has been tragically work-dedicated.

It got extremely mediocre reviews from mainstream critics and I kept hearing from mostly women in the speculative fiction community that it was actually great; it sort of went in a ripple across then-LJ and once Tumblr existed and I paid attention to it, I haven't seen a month go by without somebody reblogging a Jennifer's Body gifset. I was worried that finally seeing it would be that awkward cult-movie experience where you can understand why other people feel fanatical about it but it doesn't really do it for you, but instead it was like seeing The Mummy (1999): it was actually great.

I've seen Bound, but not High Art. I see it has a great cast.
(I wrote Jennifer's Body up.)
