The novel ends with Miriam on top, as ever. I don't remember all that much of it, aside from a truly grotesque and memorable flashback where Miriam and her two younger sisters are touring Russia(?); the sisters act young and stupid, kill too many people to obviously, and end up getting caught, roasted and eaten by the peasants they're preying on. Miriam doesn't help out, because it'd get her killed, and Miriam is Satan-practical throughout--yeah, she purports to feel bad about things, but that never stops her from doing them. John is the least of it.
