In Tim Holt's defence, I didn't notice the axe either. I do like the character moments -- for once the Navy base and neighbouring town do seem like actual communities rather than a backdrop.

mostly Roger Corman's Poe

Have you ever seen The Haunted Palace (1963)? Corman, having run out of Poe, did an adaptation of "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward," only his backers made him change the title, possibly fearing Lovecraft was too obscure.
